To encourage trips that combine biking and public transportation, Nouvelle-Aquitaine Mobilités is rolling out a network of secure bike shelters in Gironde called VéloParc Modalis. Abriplus is supporting this project with its Mosaïc enclosed bike shelters!

Safe parking to facilitate intermodal travel

Nouvelle-Aquitaine Mobilités coordinates public transportation at the regional level; its Modalis network brings together the region’s mobility services, which are accessible primarily with the Modalis card. In Gironde, the agency is developing a secure bike parking service under the VéloParc Modalis brand. The goal is to make biking an integral part of bus and train trips.

For a user to be willing to leave their bike at a train station or near a bus stop for an entire day, they must have access to a simple and reliable solution. Providing secure parking is therefore essential to promoting and encouraging intermodal travel. In this context, Nouvelle-Aquitaine Mobilités was looking for a solution capable of meeting several requirements:

  • Secure bicycles in a closed, dedicated area located in the immediate vicinity of train stations, bus stops, and multimodal hubs
  • Adapting to each location: rural train stations, town centers, transit hubs, with varying locations and capacities
  • Implement an access control system compatible with the VéloParc Modalis app and the Modalis card
  • Suitable for a variety of uses: commuting, school, train or bus connections, and occasional trips

Mosaïc Enclosed Shelters in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region

For this deployment, Abriplus offered its Mosaïc line of enclosed shelters, which address the region’s specific challenges.

These shelters are enclosed and secure, so bicycles are protected from theft and inclement weather, giving users peace of mind when parking them all day. These shelters are modular and can be adapted to meet specific parking capacity needs and fit the layout of the location. In addition, they can be customized so that users can easily recognize them. Several Mosaïc shelters have therefore been installed at various sites, each with a tailored configuration and signage that allows them to be identified at a glance.

Each bike shelter is equipped with A-type stands, motion-sensor LED lighting, and an access control system that allows each user to unlock the shelter with their transit card or phone. Parking is simple: just park your bike inside, then continue your journey by bus or train. The VéloParc Modalis app makes parking easier by letting you locate bike sheds near your route, check the number of available spots, and unlock the shed from your phone. Public transit subscribers in Gironde can use it for free.

The first 8 sites have been operational since late August 2026, and the rollout is continuing, with the goal of eventually reaching 55 hubs and more than 765 secure bike parking spaces in the department! These are impressive, large-scale achievements for sustainable transportation and intermodal travel.
