A collective composter is a composter that allows the residents of a building, a neighborhood, or a tourist accommodation such as a campsite, to deposit their organic waste so that it can be transformed into compost.

Easy to install, these composters are generally made up of several bins to store wood chips and allow for alternating between the input bins (where organic waste can still be deposited) and the maturation bins (which are closed to allow the material to mature).

In general, these bins are made of wood or plastic. Wooden collective composters are typically considered more aesthetic, but degradation due to the acidity of the material can occur within 24 months.
 

Collective composters are intended for local authorities (administrations, schools, high schools, hospitals, etc.), businesses (collective catering, offices, industries, production sites, private schools, etc.), collective housing (residences, condominiums), social housing (social housing, HLM), and any organization that wants to define a specific space for collecting organic waste.

The implementation of a collective composting unit helps promote the development of composting sites. The main advantage of providing organic waste composting bins is to reduce the weight of waste. Indeed, food waste and other biodegradable materials represent 25 to 30% of total waste production. Therefore, it is essential to sort bio-waste at the source and then recycle it into compost, fertilizer, or even energy or heat.

The collective composting bins are made of steel and wood and are installed directly at the foot of a building on a non-concrete surface (earth), just like a compost bin in a private home. The collective composter is durable and designed to be modular and scalable. Its capacity comes in a range of composters with different volumes: 400 L, 600 L, 1000 L, 1200 L… Additional extension modules can be added to a basic compost bin to create a real shared composting site. Up to 4 bins can be assembled to follow the different stages of organic waste composting: shredded wood storage bin (fragmented wood to mix with the waste), bio-waste intake bin, compost maturation bin, mature compost storage bin.

2) Voluntary drop-off bins / BacoBio shelter or BioCollect shelter for food waste

The bio-waste bin shelters are made of galvanized steel and are designed to accommodate small wheeled trash bins. These voluntary drop-off points allow users to deposit food waste directly into biodegradable bags (voluntary drop-off point – PAV). The collection agents regularly collect the organic waste, which can then be recycled.

Access to the shared composting bins can be either free or secured. To secure the composting site, all bins can be locked with a padlock. The compost bin can be equipped with an access hatch for depositing compost. This hatch can be secured with a key lock system, a padlock, or a mechanical keypad.

The collective composters from Abriplus can be installed in public or private spaces, in urban, suburban, or rural areas. The collective composting area is typically set up in neighborhood gardens, condominium courtyards, or at the foot of buildings to facilitate access and use. The collective composters can also be placed near shared gardens to directly reuse the compost. Environmentally conscious businesses, supermarkets, and collective catering services will also opt for large-capacity collective composters to recycle food waste, for example. The community composters should be installed at a sufficient distance from residences to avoid nuisances but close enough to ensure maximum participation from local residents. The neighborhood composter can be installed near the compost utilization site, such as a vegetable garden or shared garden.

For each installation of shared composters, it is important to have one or more referent individuals with good knowledge of composting. The involvement and presence of one or more residents will also help create a connection between the collective composter site and the project’s overseeing structure (local authority, association, etc.). A master composter can also assist in training these individuals. To inform users before the composters are set up and on the composting site, posters and explanations can be added to help them develop good composting habits.

The bio-waste bin shelters are primarily set up for residents who cannot have an individual composter or worm composter at their home. They simplify the deposit of organic waste by users as well as its collection and recycling by public authorities.

Deploying bio-waste bin shelters helps meet a new legal requirement under the Energy Transition for Green Growth Act (LTECV), which mandates the implementation of “source separation solutions for bio-waste for every French citizen by 2025.” The EU Waste Framework Directive has been revised to include a requirement for separate management of bio-waste by December 31, 2023 – two years before the French obligation.
