Since the mandatory sorting and recovery of biowaste at source came into force in January 2024, various solutions have been emerging all over France. Recently, we had the pleasure of working with several high schools in the south of France to help them deploy solutions for collecting and recovering their biowaste at source.
To carry out this project, our sales team studied the most suitable and effective solutions to be implemented in over a dozen high schools, taking into account locations, types of bio-waste and desired management. Biowaste at these high schools consists mainly of food leftovers from canteens and green waste such as grass clippings and dead leaves. What’s more, these establishments have beautiful green spaces.
Based on these criteria, the BioCompost collective composter was chosen for this project. This eco-designed, ergonomic and durable shared compost bin can be adapted to different needs and uses, thanks to its modularity. Currently, all BioCompost units installed consist of 3 bins:
- A biowaste storage bin for dry materials such as twigs, shavings and leaves.
- A decomposition bin for food waste such as fruit and vegetable peelings, eggshells and coffee grounds.
- A maturing bin where the various materials are transformed into compost.
If necessary, a fourth bin can be added to store mature compost, as the eco-designed BioCompost collective composter is scalable. Thanks to its large adhesive surface, it’s easy to communicate with users about the function of each bin and the products it can receive. An instruction sheet has also been added to facilitate management of thecomposting shelter.
Once the compost has been created, it can be redistributed to volunteers or used directly in green spaces. The shared composting shelters installed in these high schools in Nice, Marseille and Aix-en-Provence are an excellent example of in-house management of small and medium quantities of bio-waste. It’s a good way of raising awareness among students and staff of the importance of recycling bio-waste.
