Bike shelters

A open bike shelter is, by definition, a structure open on at least one side to allow accessibility for everyone, without restriction or special selection. Depending on the model, it may have all other sides open (but with support posts in the center), or one, two, or three sides closed with glass, sheet metal, or wood cladding. Furthermore, an open bike shelter / 2-wheeled shelter is often considered more suitable for short-term parking (just a few hours); it should be noted that these structures are less effective than closed shelters in terms of security since they are accessible to everyone.

The choice of a bike shelter model over another depends on several factors:

• The average budget allocated to bicycle parking
• Its visual impact, depending on the surrounding environment
• The available ground space
• Whether it is eligible for subsidies

To determine the preferred dimensions of my bike shelter, it is important to first assess the required capacity, which means the number of bike parking spaces needed. Since an open bike shelter is, by definition, open on at least one side, the bike’s clearance space is minimal, leaving essentially only one key factor to configure: the floor space for bike parking. Again, depending on the bike racks or stands chosen, on the same floor area of a bike shelter, you can increase the bike density, which can significantly influence the final dimensions of the shelter itself.

All bike shelters share a common structure made of galvanized steel, which is then painted with UV-resistant, thermosetting polyester powder coating baked at 200°C. The cladding of these structures varies depending on the model. There is no standard finish for open bike shelters. While some models are by default equipped with tempered safety glass on three sides, other options include wood cladding, metal sheet, perforated or laser-cut panels.

Roofs can also differ: flat or vaulted, made of metal, glass, or polycarbonate. Some open bike shelters don’t even have any closed surfaces and are built solely on a central structure with reinforced posts.

To install an open bike shelter, it is absolutely necessary to have a solid, paved, or concrete slab surface, so civil engineering work should be planned if it is absent. However, in some cases, it will be sufficient to install concrete blocks of adequate size to support the shelter’s legs (fixed at 4 points). On the installation day, it is required that the surface where the bike shelter will be placed is cleared of at least 4 meters around the perimeter to accommodate the transport vehicle on one hand, and to allow space for clearing and assembling the structure on the other.

A delay of 4 to 6 weeks is required for the installation of an open bike shelter, assuming the shelter is ordered in standard stock dimensions. For a non-stocked shelter or one modified from its standard form, the timeline should be 6 to 8 weeks. If the shelter has specific dimensions, the involvement of the design office, approval, and custom manufacturing in Abriplus workshops will extend the timeline to 10 to 14 weeks.
